The London Day of Action was a plan for a one-day city-wide general strike designed to prepare the province for bigger disruptions. December 11th 1995 defied predictions of a big flop, and 30,000 workers stayed off the job, shutting down most government services and the region's strong manufacturing sector.

Civil disobedience, breaking the law and defying employers had become the legitimate form of political opposition.
